Coming in September – “Telling the Truth: Who Is Jesus, for Us, Today?”
With all the ferment and fragmentation in the world, it may be helpful the look at the foundation of our faith – Jesus of Nazareth. How do we respond to his life today, in a complicated world, with people holding so many contrasting points of view. We will start by discussing a seminal book by acclaimed writer, Frederick Buechner, Telling the Truth – The Gospel as Tragedy, Comedy, and Fairy Tale.
As time allows, we will look at how Christians historically have interpreted Jesus’ life and death. Finally, we may come to startling conclusions for how Jesus leads us today, as a church in Coronado, and in our individual lives. In addition to Buechner’s book of 99 pages, secondary reading will refer to Dale Brown’s The Book of Buechner – a Journey Through His Writings and Diana Butler Bass’s A People’s History of Christianity – The Other Side of the Story. The latter book is an excellent introduction to the 2000 year history of Christianity. All of these can be purchased at Bay Books, or Amazon.com.
We will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 6:30 p.m. at the home of Doug and Dale St. Denis, 1505 Parkview Place.

A Very Long Engagement (2004) Un long dimanche de fiancailles (in French, with subtitles)
Amelie's Audrey Tautou stars as Mathilde, a young Frenchwoman who vows to find out what happened to her missing fiancé (Gaspard Ulliel) during World War I. He appears to have died after a court-martial, but she needs to know for sure. As she looks for the truth, she discovers unexpected things about herself and the people she meets along the way. A beautifully told story of love and passionate hope that are key ingredients of faith.
